The attention of all the District Educational officers in the State is invited
to the references cited and all you are aware that setting up of School Nutrition
(Kitchen) Gardens may achieve the goal of learning a lifelong skill which is of
critical importance in arena of rapid urbanization and environmental issues which
shape the behavioural pattern of the students. It is just one step in right direction
for school students to engage and participate meaningfully in the activities so as to
inculcate the habit of growing own vegetables and fruits in the schools and in their

homes.

Accordingly, instructions were issued to adopt the specified mechanisms for

setting up and maintenance of School Nutrition (Kitchen) Gardens on Zero Budget
Natural Faming (ZBNF) in coordination with the line departments í.e, Agriculture
Department/Horticulture Department etc.. Further, under the "flexi fund
component for innovative interventions' in Mid-Day Meal Scheme, an amount of Rs
5000/- per School Nutrition Garden may be utilized for purchase of seeds,
equipment, compost etc.. In the year 2019-20, School Nutrition Gardens have been
developed in 6041 schools out of 45484 schools in the State.
Objectives of School Nutrition Gardens:







1. To help in addressing malnutrition & micro nutrient deficiencies by

consumption of reshy grown vegetables.
2. To give children first- hand experience with nature and gardening.
3. To enhance the knowledge of children regarding nutritional aspects of
